The Secretariat

Lauren Tolbert, Secretary-General

secgen@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I participate in Model UN because it inspires me when I see a conference full of students who understand the importance of diplomacy and cooperation. In just a couple of decades, our generation will run the world, so I think this is a good head start.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

My world famous Cinnamon Rolls. They are good, no further explanation needed.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

Matthew Davis (MUNIC 2017) ate a note during a mock debate, because he just couldn’t handle the truth.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

Wait For It....I’ll Get Back To You.

5.)What's your favorite quote?

“The only disability in life is a bad attitude.” - Scott Hamilton

Carter Smith, Director-General

dirgen@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I participate in Model UN so that I can help inspire a future generation of diplomats and politically minded citizens. Having an understanding of politics and differing viewpoints is a critical skill that, unfortunately, seems to have been lost in recent years. Whether through interesting, debatable topics or an emergency crisis at midnight, if just one delegate can come away from SHSMUN with a better understanding of the complexity of politics, then my job is complete.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

Pot roast. It seems as if I’m constantly being roasted.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

My favorite SHSMUN memory was watching the 2017 SecCo crisis unfold at 3 a.m. Being able to watch the SecCo delegates scramble to find solutions while struggling to stay awake was one of the most exciting memories of any Model UN conference.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

Good in Theory

5.)What's your favorite quote?

“The long run is a misleading guide to current affairs. In the long run, we are all dead. “ -John Maynard Keynes

Emily Pérez, Under-Secretary-General

usg@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I’m asked this question all the time, and can never come up with an answer that adequately describes my love for Model UN and the way it’s changed my life. Why did I make the choice to spend hours of my time sitting in a conference room pouring over the intricacies of global topics? I’m not entirely sure, but I will say that I never regret that decision. The people I’ve met through Model UN - the brilliant, diverse array of world-changing movers-and-shakers - probably have something to do with it.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

I’m told I’m a cucumber, probably because I’m cool, refreshing, and better for you than your average potato chip.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

At a mock debate, then-USG Rose Dallimore determined that waffles were better than pancakes because, and I quote, “imagine a woman carrying water in the desert. Can you carry water in a pancake? No. Can you carry water in a waffle? Yes.”

The logic’s rock-solid, but I still disagree.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

Oops (An Ongoing Saga)

5.)What's your favorite quote?

“It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.” - Douglas Adams, Life, the Universe, and Everything

Karlyn Simcox, General Committee President

gc@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

The crux of Model UN will always be the people that make it whole. After all, the paradigm of a four year delegate is one that comes for the dynamic debate but stays for the wide array of people that make that debate extraordinary. This has been the case for me in the most intricate and wild of ways, and it will keep me connected to Model UN long past my tenure on SHSMUN staff.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

I am a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos because I make a ridiculous amount of noise when it is most inconvenient and am seasoned just enough to be considered spicy by a few.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

On my second morning of chairing SOCHUM 2017, Krista Nolan (WHO 2017) desperately tried to shake me awake. When I finally came to, she informed me that she had asked me if I was up, and I had responded instead by beginning to chair a pro-con debate in my sleep.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

The Little Book of Puns: Volume 2

5.)What's your favorite quote?

“I think Comic Sans always screams fun.” -Jerry Gergich

Jahlil White, DPC Editor-in-Chief

dpc@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I participate in Model UN not only because I get to take pictures which is what I enjoy doing, but I get to see the importance of leadership being an officer along with meeting strangers who I will call my friends right after I meet them.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

Café au Lait Crème Brûlée. I’m like that perfect mixture of coffee and milk with a custard filling; it's almost like my personality is sweet like milk and energizing like coffee.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

The whole DPC squad meeting Santa and getting Christmas cookies in November

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

ןıןɥɐɾ is Backwards.

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I participate in model un because I have always been a naturally argumentative person. By doing SHSMUN and other model UN conferences, I can argue and keep myself up to date on extremely critical issues across the globe.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

If I was a food, I would be horseradish because no one can figure out why other people like me.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

My favorite SHSMUN memory was making a motion to move into voting procedures while all five of the countries with a veto power were out of the room, sadly it did not work. Also, it was around this time where a piece of my chair broke off and my committee chair used it as her gavel.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

“How’d I get in this Situation”

5.)What's your favorite quote?

“If you have the bomb, no one will touch you.” - Vladimir Putin

Ethan Fell, Disarmament and International Security Committee Chair

disec@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

Without a shred of doubt, the people I meet at Model UN are the basis for why I love participating. Hundreds of people gather together at conferences across the world to debate real issues that have real significance and that really matter to them, and it’s incredibly inspirational to think that myself, along with all of these passionate individuals, will someday be the changemakers of the world. It brings good people together for the best of reasons, and the friendships I’ve made because of it will stay with me forever.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

Spaghetti - it looks like a mess, is a mess, but ends up being pretty alright in the end.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

Fake News in SHSMUN 2017

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

Preston Fore, Economic and Financial Committee Chair

ecofin@shsmun.org

1.) Why do you participate in Model UN?

In less than three days, one’s entire view on international affairs and diplomacy can change, especially at SHSMUN. By just stepping into any committee for a few minutes can demonstrate how anyone can begin to make a positive change on the world through international resolutions. Furthermore, the bonds formed between delegates in less than a few hours is definitely priceless; The entire experience at SHSMUN can be truly life-changing and awe-inspiring.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

A French fry. I’m tall, skinny, and occasionally a little on the salty side.

3.) What is your favorite SHSMUN memory?

The attempted annexation of 26 countries by Ireland, Russia, France, and myself, North Korea, in ECOFIN 2017 was utterly amazing. Our “Old World Amendment” received support from probably over half of our committee, but the chair unfortunately ruled it dilatory. Even after several revisions to make the resolution more practical, we were still shut down. However, the valiant effort made by my committee along with all the friendships formed, definitely made it one of the highlights of my SHSMUN experience.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

The Art of the Procrastinator

5.) What is your favorite quote?

“The secret to doing anything is believing that you can do it. Anything that you believe you can do strong enough, you can do. Anything. As long as you believe.” - Bob Ross

Virginia Alsobrooks, Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee Chair

sochum@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I participate in Model U.N. because there is almost no better way to become a more globally empathetic and aware individual than immersing yourself in the point of view of an unfamiliar country and altering your perspective on different issues, even if it’s just for a weekend. In addition to the amazing debate and environment, you meet some cool people who share your drive and passions. It’s pretty neat.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

Chili Dark Chocolate, a perfect combination of sweet and spicy.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

My favorite SHSMUN memory has to be when my delegation and I realized closing started in 5 minutes while we were still waiting for our carry-out, speeding all the way back to the convention center, and eating our pad thai on the floor in the back while awards were being called out.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

“I’m Trying My Best!”

5.)What's your favorite quote?

“Oh, I have a medical condition alright; it’s called caring too much! And it’s incurable!”- Craig Middlebrooks

Caroline Cornett, Ad Hoc 1 Chair

AdHOC@Shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I participate in Model UN because it is an experience like no other. The intensity of debate and the hilarity that inevitably arises is simply amazing! Many of my best memories and most treasured friends have their roots at this conference, because whether I am talking, working on, or thinking about SHSMUN, I enjoy every second of it. They say do what you love, love what you do, and even though it’s a cliche, I can’t think of anything else that sums up my love for Model UN.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

A bagel. I’d say we spend about the same amount of time at Panera.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

It’s SHSMUN - I can’t pick just one! In General Committee 2017, we moved through resolutions so fast that we ran out, so our chair decided to have us watch the Parks and Rec MUN episode. My other favorite memory was when we were dashing back from a restaurant so we would make it on time for the next committee session. My friend in heels kept falling over, so a few of us just carried her back several city blocks so we wouldn’t be late.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

Punstoppable

5.)What's your favorite quote?

“Let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.” - Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Caden Farley, Legal Issues Committee Chair

legal@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I participate in Model UN because it provides me with an opportunity to debate complex and fascinating international issues within the framework of parliamentary procedure. The politics of committee is exhilarating and the people are great.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

Haggis. I’d only be eaten in Scotland, so as long as I was anywhere else I would be safe.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

Last year, a delegate attempted to speak for 10 minutes to give his group time to finish their super-resolution. He made an admirable effort to essentially filibuster the committee until he was able to introduce the paper, but eventually he ran out of points to make and began to ramble on the topic. The entire committee slowly and gradually realized his strategy and broke out in laughter.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

“Please Don’t Make This Into a Movie”

5.)What's your favorite quote?

“I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy.” -John Adams

Sydney Anne Sutherland, Ad Hoc 2 Chair

SPECPOL@SHSMUN.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I am a bit of an argumentative person in general, and Model UN allows me to express that in a way that is both constructive and enjoyable. Also, I genuinely love learning about international issues and potential solutions. It lets me become a more responsible global citizen, as cliche as that phrase may be. I feel as though if I am to actually make a difference in the world, as I wish to do, I must hold myself accountable for being informed about current events.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

Personally, I think I’m more of a hashbrowns type of person: salty, versatile, and best at Waffle House, but the quiz I just took told me I was “Inventive Tofu,” so make of that what you will.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

I was almost coerced into doing SHSMUN the first time not knowing any ParliPro or anything about the United Nations. As expected, I did not say much in committee, and I briefly considered not doing it the next year. The second night of SHSMUN 2015, I went to dinner with friends from my school, and we held a mock debate at the restaurant. It was over something dumb that I don’t remember, but I think that moment was when I realized I was in the right place, and I knew I was going to be doing SHSMUN until I graduated. I think freshman me would be proud.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

Yikes: A Memoir, or How to Drink as Much Diet Coke as Possible Without Dying

5.)What's your favorite quote?

“I was born for politics. I have great hair, and I love lying.” --Gina Linetti

Bailey Lombardo, Model UN Introductory Committee Chair

munic@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

Because I love learning about multiple sides and perspectives on an issue and getting to see first time delegates starting to understand and get involved in debate. It always makes me so proud! And, of course, because who doesn't love the confidence that comes with walking around in WBA.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

One of those big pretzels. Because I'm always either sweet, cheesy, or salty and I'm less enjoyable when I'm neither.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

On the last night of SHSMUN 2017, my school ordered Chinese food for dinner. I opened my fortune cookie right after my officer interview and it said “You will receive a prestige award or prize within the coming days.” which came true when I became MUNIC chair! Also, after closing ceremonies when Matthew (2017 MUNIC chair) said, “YOU ARE THE MUNIC CHAIR NOW!” I'm still a little shook.

4.) If your life was a book what would the title be?

That Wasn't as Funny as it was in My Head

5.)What's your favorite quote?

Komal Patri, United Nations Environment Programme Chair

unep@shsmun.org

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

I participate in Model UN because it provides the opportunity for my voice to be heard on the level of my peers while discussing issues prevalent to the world. It fosters fascinating conversations about international relations and how to best address the directive given to us. As a delegate, I found myself wanting to focus the conversation on a different facet of a topic which is an opportunity I have been given as a chair. I am allowed to choose an issue I am passionate about and watch it be crafted into incredible resolutions.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

I wasn’t quite sure how to answer this question, so I took a Buzzfeed quiz. The quiz told me that I would in fact we a double chocolate cookie. It said that I was this particular cookie because “You're like *realness* given human form. People would probably be a little scared of you if you weren't so clearly awesome that they just want to BE you.” Thank you Buzzfeed.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

My favorite SHSMUN memory would have to be at SHSMUN 2017. Saturday had been a very long and stressful day filled with debating, arguing, and resolution writing. After my staff interview, I went with two of my incredibly close friends Lori Baxter (MUNIC chair 2016) and Elizabeth Landrum (GenCo Pres 2016) and we talked about model UN, college, and joked around until very late in the morning. I ended up crashing in Lori’s hotel room. I was able to see how model UN impacted both of their  lives and it made me even more excited for my journey as a chair.

1. ) Why do you participate in Model UN?

Model UN is an opportunity for students to use empathetic and logical abilities to resolve important issues that parallel those in international politics. I strongly believe that this conference is the absolute best way to prepare for foreign service and political science due to the rigorous research and debate it demands. Although it is serious and exhausting, participating in SHSMUN is the most fun I've ever had; the experiences and friendships that are created are lifelong and unforgettable.

2.) What kind of food would you be? Why?

Potato candy. Unusual, tasty, and obnoxiously sweet.

3.) What is your Favorite SHSMUN memory?

I don't think I can pick out a favorite memory. All of the experiences I've had at SHSMUN are personally valuable in various ways. However, I do love hanging out with people I might not normally hang out with.

I participate in Model UN because I love it when people come together setting aside their differences, figuring out what’s wrong and find a solution for it.
