The Special Political and Decolonization Committee is the organ of the General Assembly that has the responsibility of addressing the most varied and, in some cases, delicate situations that the United Nations faces. Some of these responsibilities include decolonization efforts, matters regarding outer space, atomic radiation, the University for Peace, Palestinian refugees, and international conflicts that have not escalated to the point of Security Council intervention.

Topics

Topic A: Protecting Internet Freedom

The Internet was and is one of the most influential inventions of the new millennium. However, access to this life-changing technology has become more and more restricted, despite the fact that it has been declared a human right by the Human Rights Council.

Topic B: Assessing Private Influence on Extraterrestrial Affairs

Outer space has always been primarily the domain of national-level projects controlled by member states of the UN. However, private companies are beginning to expand their sphere of influence, and the UN has not yet established an international framework for these activities.

Topic C: Mitigating Tensions in the Baltic Region

The Baltic region, which consists of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, has seen recent increases in militarization due to pressures from Russia to the east. Because the Baltic states are NATO member states, an armed confrontation in the area could quickly lead to world war, and therefore must be deescalated as quickly and effectively as possible.

1) What are your hobbies?

Talking about flags, reading, driving, pining over Rishab Jain, and looking at embarrassing pictures of Gavin LaPlace.

2) Why do you participate in Model UN?

To learn more about the international community and the world as a whole! I love debating and being in committee, and chairing (at least so far). And it also lets me interact more with Rishab Jain.

3) What would your theme song be?

The theme from Cory in the House.

4) What is your favorite quote?

“The world bores you when you’re cool.” ― Calvin, Calvin & Hobbes

5) What is your favorite SHSMUN memory?

Completely dominating committee at SHSMUN 2016 when there was a crisis involving a coup in my country. I moved myself to the top of the speakers' list by way of suspending the rules and everything. It was fun.
