The World Health Organization is one of the primary international medical bodies. As a specialized agency of the United Nations, WHO is responsible for improving global medical systems, providing guidance and information on diseases and public health issues, creating model plans for medical systems and emergency situations, and setting the global health agenda. WHO’s goal is to ensure healthy futures for all global citizens by promoting healthy lifestyles and combatting diseases.
Topic A: International Regulation of Stem Cells
As the power and proliferation of stem cells ever increases, it is the job of WHO to ensure that this new medical technology is being used efficiently, legally, and ethically. The current lack of regulation can and has led to abuses from doctors and companies, which has harmed medically vulnerable people.
Topic B: Maternal Health in Conflict Areas
In areas of conflict, expectant and new mothers disproportionately suffer from crumbling medical systems. Lack of adequate resources and tense situations leaves mothers and their infants without the care they need to ensure survival and proper development.
Topic C: Vector-Borne Disease Control
Some of the largest and worst diseases in the world are caused by vectors -- small organisms that transmit diseases to humans. The transmission of these diseases is very easy due to climate, population, and migration, so it is especially important to eradicate these diseases before they continue to spread and devastate.
